{"id":4925,"date":"2026-07-03T16:11:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T16:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.andex-rhp.org\/?p=4925"},"modified":"2026-07-03T16:11:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T16:11:13","slug":"extincion-de-glaciaretes-muy-pequenos-en-el-norte-y-centro-de-chile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.andex-rhp.org\/?p=4925","title":{"rendered":"Extinci\u00f3n de glaciaretes muy peque\u00f1os en el norte y centro de Chile"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Por Felipe Ugalde Peralta*\/<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los glaciares peque\u00f1os (con superficie menor a 0,5 km<sup>2<\/sup>), los glaciaretes (superficie menor a 0,25 km<sup>2<\/sup>) y, en particular, los glaciaretes muy peque\u00f1os (superficie menor a 0,01 km<sup>2<\/sup>, equivalente a menos de 1 hect\u00e1rea), a pesar de ser numerosos en ambientes de monta\u00f1a, est\u00e1n subrepresentados en la investigaci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica al momento de evaluar su respuesta al cambio clim\u00e1tico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En este art\u00edculo presentamos la extinci\u00f3n de 77 glaciaretes muy peque\u00f1os distribuidos en los Andes del norte y centro de Chile. Entendemos como extinci\u00f3n la ausencia completa de hielo visible en superficie al tiempo que lo \u00fanico que se ve, donde sol\u00eda estar mapeado el glaciar, son afloramientos rocosos o cuerpos de agua. Tambi\u00e9n analizamos la presunta extinci\u00f3n de otros 244 glaciaretes muy peque\u00f1os. Por presunta extinci\u00f3n entendemos la ausencia de hielo visible en superficie donde solo se observan detritos en el lugar en que sol\u00eda estar el glaciarete muy peque\u00f1o. Esta categor\u00eda se plantea ante la imposibilidad de corroborar en terreno la extinci\u00f3n del cuerpo de hielo utilizando m\u00e9todos directos, o indirectos, como sondajes y geof\u00edsica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El estudio corresponde a la continuaci\u00f3n de un an\u00e1lisis de p\u00e9rdida de hielo en glaciaretes del norte y centro de Chile,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/earth-science\/articles\/10.3389\/feart.2025.1565290\/full\">publicado en 2025<\/a>, y llevado a cabo mediante im\u00e1genes satelitales. Para realizar el presente estudio, comparamos en detalle los Inventarios P\u00fablicos de Glaciares 2014 (IPG2014) y 2022 (IPG2022) elaborados por la Direcci\u00f3n General de Aguas, DGA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El an\u00e1lisis comprende un total de 321 glaciaretes muy peque\u00f1os, extintos y presuntamente extintos, dentro del \u00e1rea de estudio. Esto equivale a la p\u00e9rdida de 5,69 millones de m<sup>3<\/sup>&nbsp;de volumen de hielo equivalente en agua de acuerdo con informaci\u00f3n reportada por el IPG2022 de la DGA. Nuestros resultados muestran que el 45,5% de los glaciaretes muy peque\u00f1os se extinguieron tras la reducci\u00f3n de glaciares peque\u00f1os individuales a principios del siglo XXI, mientras que el 53,0% de la muestra desapareci\u00f3 tras fragmentarse de glaciares m\u00e1s grandes en el mismo per\u00edodo. As\u00ed, y al cruzar nuestra informaci\u00f3n con el Inventario Global de Glaciares Randolph 7.0, podemos a\u00f1adir 139 glaciares extintos al&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/glaciercasualtylist.rice.edu\/\"><em>Global Glacier Casualty List<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nuestras observaciones acerca del comportamiento generalizado de reducci\u00f3n de superficie, junto con la extinci\u00f3n de los glaciaretes muy peque\u00f1os, son atribuidas a las condiciones extremadamente secas al final de la megasequ\u00eda de los Andes Centrales de 2009-2022, incluyendo los catastr\u00f3ficos a\u00f1os 2019 y 2021 en t\u00e9rminos de la muy escasa precipitaci\u00f3n registrada. Finalmente, este estudio se plantea como un ejercicio para cuantificar una tendencia que no solo se limita a glaciaretes muy peque\u00f1os, sino que es extrapolable a glaciares de mayor superficie.
