Esta Megasequ\u00eda ha durado m\u00e1s de una d\u00e9cada y ha resultado en d\u00e9ficits multianuales de precipitaci\u00f3n de hasta un 40%. La Megasequ\u00eda ha tenido efectos negativos en el caudal de los r\u00edos (Masiokas et al., 2019), la humedad del suelo (Gonz\u00e1lez-Reyes et al., 2024), los incendios forestales (Gonz\u00e1lez et al., 2018) y los niveles lacustres (Fuentealba et al., 2021). Tambi\u00e9n ha agravado las tensiones por el acceso al agua entre comunidades locales y actividades como la agricultura y miner\u00eda. Durante la sequ\u00eda, la cobertura nival en la cordillera ha disminuido dr\u00e1sticamente (Cordero et al., 2024) y los glaciares han sufrido fuertes p\u00e9rdidas de masa (Dussaillant et al., 2019; Caro et al., 2024).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En nuestro estudio quisimos responder a las siguientes preguntas: \u00bfEn qu\u00e9 medida el derretimiento de hielo ha compensado la falta de precipitaci\u00f3n en las cuencas glaciares? \u00bfY qu\u00e9 ocurrir\u00e1 si un evento similar sucede en el futuro cuando los glaciares sean mucho m\u00e1s peque\u00f1os producto del cambio clim\u00e1tico? Para responder a estas preguntas, configuramos un modelo hidrol\u00f3gico que simula la respuesta de los glaciares a la Megasequ\u00eda, considerando procesos f\u00edsicos como la influencia de la cobertura detr\u00edtica, las avalanchas de nieve y las variaciones estacionales de albedo superficial. El estudio abarc\u00f3 los 100 glaciares m\u00e1s grandes de la cordillera entre 30\u00b0S y 40\u00b0S.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nuestros resultados sugieren que la acumulaci\u00f3n nival anual sobre los glaciares disminuy\u00f3 en promedio un 36%, alcanzando un valor de 66% en el a\u00f1o 2019. Por otra parte, el escurrimiento glaciar total (lluvia m\u00e1s el derretimiento de nieve y hielo) pr\u00e1cticamente no cambi\u00f3 respecto a la d\u00e9cada anterior, ya que el derretimiento de hielo compens\u00f3 casi por completo la falta de nieve en las cuencas glaciares. Posteriormente, analizamos la evoluci\u00f3n futura de los glaciares forzando el modelo con proyecciones clim\u00e1ticas bajo dos escenarios de emisiones (moderado y severo). Se proyecta que la temperatura del aire promedio sobre los glaciares aumentar\u00eda entre 1.5\u00b0C y 4.7\u00b0C hacia 2100, mientras que la precipitaci\u00f3n se mantendr\u00eda a niveles similares salvo en los escenarios m\u00e1s severos. Como resultado, estimamos que el volumen glaciar disminuir\u00e1 entre 55% y 78% hacia finales de siglo. Finalmente, identificamos futuros periodos secos, similares a la Megasequ\u00eda actual, proyectados para el \u00faltimo cuarto del siglo, cuando los glaciares sean mucho m\u00e1s peque\u00f1os. Durante estos eventos, el escurrimiento glaciar total podr\u00eda disminuir 20% anualmente y hasta 48% en verano respecto de 2000-2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durante la Megasequ\u00eda el derretimiento glaciar ayud\u00f3 a sostener niveles m\u00ednimos de caudal en la cordillera. Si una Megasequ\u00eda similar ocurriera a finales de este siglo, esta capacidad amortiguadora ser\u00e1 mucho menor. Hacia aguas abajo, la disminuci\u00f3n del aporte h\u00eddrico glaciar podr\u00eda agravar la escasez h\u00eddrica para personas, agricultura y ecosistemas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"816\" src=\"https:\/\/www.andex-rhp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GLACIER_V4-1024x816.png\" alt=\"Respuesta hidrol\u00f3gica de los glaciares a las megasequ\u00edas actuales y previstas.
