Los micropl\u00e1sticos son peque\u00f1os fragmentos de pl\u00e1stico, que se forman cuando\u00a0 los pl\u00e1sticos grandes se rompen en part\u00edculas diminutas. Debido a su tama\u00f1o y baja\u00a0 densidad, pueden viajar largas distancias por el aire y llegar incluso a lugares remotos\u00a0 como la Ant\u00e1rtida o los glaciares de alta monta\u00f1a.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El Antisana es un volc\u00e1n cubierto por un casquete de hielo, ubicado a m\u00e1s de 5.500\u00a0 metros de altura. Aunque es un lugar aislado y lejos de grandes centros industriales,\u00a0 estudios anteriores ya hab\u00edan mostrado que en la superficie de su nieve hay\u00a0 micropl\u00e1sticos, lo que indica que el viento los transporta desde muy lejos.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para entender no solo si hay micropl\u00e1sticos, sino qu\u00e9 tan r\u00e1pido se acumulan en el aire&nbsp; que respiramos, el equipo extrajo un n\u00facleo de hielo de 8 metros de profundidad en el&nbsp; glaciar Antisana. Esta muestra de hielo funciona como una \u201chistoria en capas\u201d de lo que&nbsp; ha ido cayendo desde la atm\u00f3sfera. Para saber cu\u00e1nto tiempo representaba ese n\u00facleo,&nbsp; analizaron la composici\u00f3n isot\u00f3pica del agua (\u03b4\u00b9\u2078O), que cambia con las estaciones y&nbsp; permite identificar un ciclo completo de lluvias y sequ\u00edas marcado por la climatolog\u00eda andina tropical.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Se analizaron 35 secciones del n\u00facleo, cada una procesada mediante filtraci\u00f3n, flotaci\u00f3n&nbsp; salina y espectroscop\u00eda micro-FTIR para identificar y clasificar las part\u00edculas pl\u00e1sticas. Se&nbsp; hallaron 1762 micropl\u00e1sticos, entre fibras (81%) y fragmentos (19%).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Al relacionar la cantidad de micropl\u00e1sticos con la profundidad del hielo (es decir, con el&nbsp; tiempo), observaron un patr\u00f3n claro: las capas m\u00e1s recientes, cerca de la superficie,&nbsp; ten\u00edan muchas m\u00e1s part\u00edculas que las capas m\u00e1s antiguas. Corrigiendo por la&nbsp; compactaci\u00f3n del hielo, estimaron que la concentraci\u00f3n aument\u00f3 de unos 140 a 292&nbsp; micropl\u00e1sticos por litro a lo largo de un solo a\u00f1o hidrol\u00f3gico, es decir, un incremento de&nbsp; aproximadamente 2,1 veces.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Este resultado indica que la atm\u00f3sfera no solo transporta micropl\u00e1sticos hasta la alta&nbsp; monta\u00f1a, sino que se est\u00e1 enriqueciendo r\u00e1pidamente con ellos, incluso en la parte alta&nbsp; de la troposfera, por encima de la capa donde las lluvias limpian m\u00e1s eficientemente el&nbsp; aire. Esto tiene implicaciones para la salud de los ecosistemas de monta\u00f1a, para el agua&nbsp; que consumen las poblaciones r\u00edo abajo y potencialmente para la salud humana, ya que&nbsp; algunos de los pol\u00edmeros encontrados se han asociado a efectos t\u00f3xicos.
