En el noroeste de Sudam\u00e9rica, una regi\u00f3n de paisajes monta\u00f1osos complejos y alta actividad de SCM, estos sistemas son responsables de una proporci\u00f3n significativa de las precipitaciones y, por ende, potenciales generadores de desastres naturales. Por su importancia, entender c\u00f3mo se forman, se mueven y evolucionan es vital, especialmente para mejorar las predicciones meteorol\u00f3gicas y reducir riesgos asociados a fen\u00f3menos como inundaciones, deslizamientos, avenidas torrenciales y otros eventos adversos. En el estudio \u201cClimatological Tracking and Lifecycle Characteristics of Mesoscale Convective Systems in Northwestern South America\u201d<sup>1<\/sup>, empleamos un algoritmo de rastreo, ATRACKCS<sup>2<\/sup> (Algorithm for TRACKing Convective Systems, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s), para identificar y rastrear la evoluci\u00f3n de los SCM usando 21 a\u00f1os de datos satelitales de precipitaci\u00f3n y temperatura de brillo. Los resultados revelaron patrones marcados en la ocurrencia, ciclo de vida y movimiento de los SCM, destacando:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dominancia nocturna y concentraci\u00f3n espacial: Los SCM se ocurren principalmente al oeste de la topograf\u00eda, concentr\u00e1ndose en regiones como: La costa del Pac\u00edfico colombiano, el Valle del Magdalena, el lago de Maracaibo, El golfo de Panam\u00e1 y las Guianas venezolanas. En estas regiones, los SCM exhiben una marcada preferencia por desarrollarse durante la noche, contrastando con el patr\u00f3n diurno t\u00edpico de convecci\u00f3n en otras regiones.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Influencia de la topograf\u00eda: La orograf\u00eda andina ejerce un control significativo sobre la evoluci\u00f3n y movimiento de los SCM. Los SCM que se desarrollan cerca de la topograf\u00eda tienden a intensificarse m\u00e1s r\u00e1pidamente. Al este de la cordillera de los Andes, los SCM tienden a ser m\u00e1s peque\u00f1os y a moverse m\u00e1s r\u00e1pidamente que aquellos al oeste de la cordillera.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>El movimiento de los SCM: Si bien la direcci\u00f3n predominante del movimiento de estos eventos en la regi\u00f3n es hacia el oeste (impulsada por los vientos alisios), esta puede variar seg\u00fan la \u00e9poca del a\u00f1o. En la primera mitad del a\u00f1o, los SCM se desplazan predominantemente hacia el sur, mientras que en la segunda mitad de a\u00f1o el movimiento tiende hacia el norte.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Las variaciones estacionales y espaciales de los SCM son el resultado de una compleja interacci\u00f3n entre diversos factores, como la posici\u00f3n de la Zona de Convergencia Intertropical, la disponibilidad de humedad, la topograf\u00eda y la actividad de los chorros de bajo nivel.
